Selected Diary Pages Prior to Being Stationed in
Lavenham, England
June 6, 1944 “D”-day “H”-hour Invasion of Europe by allied forces. Very Important Day, it may be the beginning of the end for Hitler and his gang. We pray for their success.

Sept. 10, 1944 (21st birthday) Spent on the train (somewhere in TEXAS) coming back to camp from furlough. We had a little spirits, Murphy, Kennerson, Greek and myself. Train ran off the tracks, delayed us about four hours. (What a birthday.)

Sept. 29, 1944 Took off this morning at 2:00 a.m. (from Goose Bay, Labrador) and flew to Meeks Field, Iceland. We passed over Greenland on the way. We landed in Iceland at 10:30 a.m. A beer ship was torpedoed just off the coast by the Germans, so we had plenty of beer to drink. It was good beer, too.

Oct. 4, 1944 (Stone, England) Got a job as a latrine orderly today, really a “goldbrick” job. It will keep me off K.P. (It says here in small print)    Got K.P. tonight. It was really very easy, but it hurt my pride. Sliced butter most of the night and ate too much. Was on K.P. from 7:00 p.m. till 2:00 a.m.
